Das Klima ist bereits deutlich wärmer als in vorindustrieller Zeit, in Österreich um 2,9 Grad, in der Schweiz um 2,8 Grad. In Deutschland waren die vergangenen zehn Jahre 2,3 Grad wärmer als zu Beginn der Messungen. Auch 2024 bestätigt den Trend zu einem immer wärmeren Klima. Mit konsequentem Klimaschutz könnten die negativen Auswirkungen des Klimawandels in den nächsten Jahrzehnten deutlich abgemildert werden. Weiter

Das BAFU hat 2024 zum vierten Mal den PACTA Klimatest durchgeführt. Dieser zeigt auf, wie klimaverträglich die Portfolios der teilnehmenden Schweizer Finanzinstitute sind. Die Ergebnisse der neusten Erhebung zeigen, dass eine Mehrheit der Finanzinstitute das Netto-Null-Klimaziel in ihrer Unternehmensstrategie abbildet. Die unternommenen Anstrengungen sind aber noch nicht überall im Einklang mit diesem Ziel. L’Office fédéral de météorologie et de climatologie (MétéoSuisse) et le Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC) ont signé un contrat-cadre qui renforce une collaboration ciblée visant à utiliser l’intelligence artificielle dans la météorologie et la climatologie. Cet accord facilite les projets communs et garantit un partenariat à long terme. Forschende unter der Leitung der University of Oxford und mit Beteiligung der Universität Bern bemängeln in einer im Fachmagazin Nature publizierten Studie, dass die natürliche CO2-Entfernung aus der Atmosphäre durch Wälder oder Ozeane häufig in die Netto-Null-Bilanz von Klimaschutzmassnahmen einfliesst. La 29e conférence sur le climat (COP29) s’est terminée le 24 novembre à Bakou. Les États se sont mis d’accord sur un nouvel objectif collectif de financement à hauteur de 300 milliards de dollars par an, à atteindre à partir de 2035. En outre, ils ont finalisé les règles relatives au mécanisme de marché qui leur permettent de se faire créditer les réductions d’émissions obtenues à l’étranger. La Suisse se félicite que davantage d’États contribuent désormais à l’objectif financier et que les investis-sements dans les mesures de protection du climat puissent être renforcés. As climate impacts intensify globally, the «Emissions Gap Report 2024: No more hot air … please!» finds that nations must deliver dramatically stronger ambition and action in the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions or the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C goal will be gone within a few years. The report is the 15th edition in a series that brings together many of the world’s top climate scientists to look at future trends in greenhouse gas emissions and provide potential solutions to the challenge of global warming. More

The «Climate Change Performance Index» an independent monitoring tool, is informing on the Paris Agreement’s implementation phase. Since 2005, the CCPI has provided analysis of countries’ climate protection performance. It creates transparency in climate policy, makes it possible to compare climate protection efforts, and sheds light on progress and setbacks. In the newest CCPI update, Switzerland drops 12 places in the ranking to 33rd. More

As climate change impacts intensify, the need for climate services to support mitigation, adaptation and increase resilience has never been higher. In the past five years, there has been progress in provision of this climate information for decision-making, but big gaps remain and investment lags far behind need. The latest edition of the report published by the World Meteorological Organization explores the current state of play and also documents the progress that has been made in the last five years.  More

Total net greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union dropped by 8% last year, marking significant progress towards climate neutrality for the EU. The huge drop was led by a significant decline in coal use and growth of renewable energy sources and supported by reduced energy consumption across Europe, according to estimated figures included in the latest European Environment Agency (EEA) «Trends and Projections» report published on 31 October. The annual EEA check-up on EU progress on its energy and climate targets stresses that EU Member States will need to sustain this rate of progress to achieve Europe’s climate and energy targets. More

Launched on 28 October by a global consortium of scientists, this annual report synthesizes key findings from the past 18 months, aiming to inform policy decisions at COP29 and beyond. More

NatureFinance has partnered with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), the European Central Bank (ECB) and the University of Minnesota on a project to explore. The degradation of nature, including biodiversity loss, is a substantial threat to humanity, the economy and financial stability. This is why financial stakeholders can benefit from frameworks that model scenarios and risks which provide a comprehensive understanding of integrated climate- and nature-related economic and financial risks. More

Today’s investment decisions, for example concerning energy supply, will also determine the quantity of greenhouse gases that will be emitted in the future. In the 2015 Paris Agreement, the international community set three main objectives, including making finance flows consistent with a pathway towards low greenhouse gas emissions and climate-resilient development. This means that in the future, more money will be invested in environmentally friendly and future-oriented technologies and energy sources, and less in greenhouse gas-intensive technologies and energy sources. Switzerland has written this target into law in the Climate and Innovation Act (CIA). More
