| | Good afternoon Good communication is not always easy, be it at work, in friendship or in love. When it comes to climate change, it's even more difficult. Such a complex problem poses further challenges. This makes it all the more important to reflect on your own climate communication. This is exactly what we did during an online event. In 2024, we published the ‘Graz Charter for Climate Communication’. With the key question ‚Is climate communication improving with the Graz Charter?’, we examined whether the 21 guidelines set out in the charter are effective. The response has been substantial: since its publication last autumn, more than 1,000 people with scientific and practical backgrounds have signed the charter. And more than 150 people from the DACH region attended the online event. It became clear that in order to master the challenges of climate communication, the charter should not be amended, but rather developed further. Climate communication is a core concern of ProClim. The event has encouraged me to continue my commitment. On behalf of ProClim, I wish you good and purposeful conversations - be it at work, in friendship or in love | |

| The online event ‘Will the Graz Charter improve climate communication?’ was very well received
| |
| How is the Graz Charter changing climate communication in the DACH region?
A webinar on this topic was held on 13 May. Around 150 participants logged into the online event at at midday to listen to the input from Isabella Uhl-Hädicke, Alex Tiefenbacher and Petra Pinzler and to discuss climate communication. The event was co-organised by ProClim - Forum for Climate and Global Change and moderated by Carel Mohn from klimafakten.de. Read a short review of the event here.

| Roles of scientists in society
Current challenges such as the transformation towards sustainable ways of living require a closer collaboration of science with society and politics. How scientists can support such societal processes most effectively depends on the situation and the topic. A new guide for reflecting on possible roles in sustainability transformations as well as general principles derived from it help to analyse the different roles of researchers in society. These are available online on a new website. More / Weiter / Plus

Climate communication also concerns us here at ProClim. How can positive visions be created that do not present the path to climate neutrality as a great sacrifice and an arduous endeavour, but rather make us look forward to the challenge that lies ahead? Read more about our project on creating positive images of the future (in German).

| Weather and climate data freely available
| |
| As part of the Open Government Data (OGD) initiative, the Swiss Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology MeteoSwiss is making its wealth of collected, processed and refined meteorological and climatological data available to all interested parties free of charge from May 2025. This step marks the beginning of a new era for MeteoSwiss. The publicly available data will be continuously expanded to provide the greatest possible benefit for society, business and research. | Energy perspectives for the city of Frauenfeld: Digital solutions pave the way to net-zero
| |
|
After a two year-project, Thurplus, the city of Frauenfelds's utility company, and Empa last Wednesday presented the report, Energy Perspectives 2050. The project sheds light on energy scenarios from today to 2050, extrapolated from around 20,000 smart meter data sets. The conclusion of the study: Net zero is feasible – the key lies in district heating and replacing conventional, fossil heating systems. Mehr / Plus / More

| Prix Schläfli 2025 award for the four best dissertations in natural sciences
| |
|
Simona Meiler (Geosciences), Ewa Merz (Biology), Martin Sarott (Physics) and Hyun Suk Wang (Chemistry) were honoured with the Prix Schläfli 2025 for findings made in the context of their dissertations. Through this prize, the Swiss Academy of Sciences (SCNAT) singles out the four most significant insights of young researchers at Swiss universities. The Prix Schläfli has been awarded since 1866. | Adaptation to climate change funding programme – Adapt+
| |
| The risks posed by climate change are increasing. What does this mean for Switzerland? And how can we face up to these challenges, take action and find solutions? On 2 April 2025, the CO2 Ordinance came into force, thereby providing a legal basis for the Adapt+ climate change adaptation funding programme. This programme, run by the Federal Office for the Environment FOEN, provides federal support for the implementation of adaptation measures. Deadline: 31 August 2025. More / Weiter / Plus

| Mountain research initiative Call for Synthesis Activities 2025-2026
| |
| As part of its mission, the MRI provides funding contributions for syntheses activities that bring together global change researchers to address specific topics of relevance to the mountain research, policy, and practitioner communities. For 2025-2026, the call is specifically focused on responding to a key MRI objective in the 2023-2026 period, namely to “consolidate the state-of-the-art based on 25 years of scientific advances, research, syntheses, data, and information that has been fostered via the MRI”. Deadline for proposals: 6 June 2025. More

| Conversations on Climate: The People Behind the Science
| |
| This open access book presents interviews with high-profile climate scientists about state-of-the-art research questions. Consequences of climate change have become more and more visible and are now regularly discussed in political and societal debates. The author, Gerrit Lohmann, a climate scientist at the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven, was given the opportunity to talk to leading climate scientists from different disciplines. These do not only include theoretical physics, paleo-research, and climate modelling, but also cover the role of the biosphere, extreme weather events, and attribution science. Additionally, the interviews also address the political dimension of climate science. More

| Changing Wildfires - Policy Options for a Fire-literate and Fire-adapted Europe
| |
| “Europe will increasingly have to learn to live with fire and adapt society to a new challenging reality,” warns Prof. Thomas Elmqvist, EASAC Environment Director. “More than twice as many urban areas are at risk of fire in Europe than in North America and Asia.“ Already today, wildfires in the EU burn, on average, half a million hectares yearly - nearly twice the size of Luxembourg. Elaborated by 23 scientists nominated by their respective national science academies, the new EASAC report highlights the complex drivers behind the surge in wildfire risk. More | |

| Global Methane Tracker 2025
| |
|
The Global Methane Tracker 2025 released by the IEA is the latest sector-wide emissions estimates, based on the most recent data from satellites and measurement campaigns, and examines different abatement options along with their associated costs. Methane abatement is a crucial opportunity to reduce near-term global warming at a time when temperatures worldwide have set record highs for two years in a row. More

| Children facing extreme heat: For a series of generations born globally between 1960 and 2020, researchers calculated the nubmer of people that will experience unprecedented exposure to heatwaves over their lifetimes, under three climate scenarios. | | |
|
| | | Research impulse of the month
« Just over half of the children born in 2020 will face unprecedented
exposure to heatwaves over their lifetime — even under a conservative
projection for how climate change will unfold over the next 75 years. The
figure rises to 92% of today’s five-year-olds if more pessimistic
climate predictions come to pass, and compares with just 16% of people
born in 1960 under any future climate scenario.»- Celeste Biever in an news article in nature about the study Global emergence of unprecedented lifetime exposure to climate extremes by Luke Grant and colleagues
